Let’s get started…………..

Why are there Lots of Scuffs on Leather Shoes

Scratches naturally come on leather shoes when you use them a lot but we have to know how the noticeable deep scratches come on the shoe.

1. At the Workplace

Now it is important how you use the shoe, if you work in any industry with heavy machinery or maybe on a construction site then it is common to have scratches on the shoe.

As an Engineer, I know very well how the industry works. We need to go to different places and due to the friction with objects, and machines these scratches are noticed. Not only this, the shoe starts peeling from there which is a big issue.

So, you can not avoid wearing shoes but you can make some changes in choosing. If you spend a long time on the site then a rugged leather shoe would be a good option instead of a formal shoe.

Otherwise, wear a good anti-wrinkle shoe protector at work to avoid these creases on the shoe.

2. Save it from Your Pets

Many of you keep pets at home, maybe a dog or a cat mainly. They start playing with whatever they get and a shoe is one of their favorite items. Your shoes can get a deep scratch because of their nails.

So, whenever you come back home, keep the shoe out of the range of their eyes. Somewhere at a height that they cannot reach.

Also, from time to time trim your pet’s nails to avoid harm to any living or non-living object at your home. However, better training would be the best solution.

3. Other Possible Reasons

  • If you use leather shoes sometimes, you do not keep them carefully and keep some heavy things on your leather shoe, you do not know. The shoe gets stuck under it. A cut mark comes on it.
  • Also if you are a heavy user then before and after use care for it properly.
  • Since leather is not waterproof, to not make it soft it is very important to protect it from moisture. Use any sealed wrapper or box to keep your shoe safe.

How to Fix Scratches on Leather Shoes

# Fix Minor or Normal Scratches

Clean the Shoe with Shoe Polish

Required Supplies
  • A wooden shoe shaper
  • A wet Towel
  • A horsehair brush
  • Shoe Polish (Wax)

Method

  • First, a wooden shoe shaper must be inserted inside the shoe to maintain its shape.
  • Then clean the leather shoe thoroughly by taking a wet towel. So, if there is dust anywhere, it will come out well.
  • Then dry the shoe properly and then apply shoe polish wax and again make it dry.
  • Take the horse hair brush and polish the shoe properly from all sides.
  • Here we are using a horsehair brush because it does not damage the topmost layer of the leather shoe and that is what we want.

By Leather Shoe Scratch Repair Kit

Q. Why use a leather shoe scratch repair kit?

Sometimes due to heavy wear, a big pit or scratch forms on the shoe that cannot be hidden by shoe wax. So, we need to fill that big area with some material and match the level of the scratched surface to the existing non-scratched surface.

Then we can apply the shoe polish to completely repair the shoe. This is what a leather shoe scratch repair kit does.

Method

  • A leather shoe scratch repair kit consists of repair filler material and different colors.
  • Take out the shoe repair filler from the kit and apply it well to the scratched surface of the shoe.
  • Now Keep it for drying for 22-24 hours.
  • According to your shoe color take that colored cream from the kit and gently apply it to the shoe. Now for black, it would be very easy to apply shoe polish after repair because we normally have black-colored polish.
  • Again dry the shoe for 5-6 hours and apply polish wax and your shoe will look like a new one.

# Remove Deep Scratches from Leather Shoes

Emery Paper Technique

  • In this method, we need to use 800-1500 grit emery paper and leather color cream.
  • Rub the scratched area with emery paper for 5-10 minutes so that the color and leather upper surface will slowly come off. Slowly the scratches will also come out.
  • You need to make smooth the surface so that after 3 to 4 minutes of rubbing check the smoothness with your hand.
  • After this, apply leather coloring cream. Do it by applying a little bit of pressure to fill the area properly.
  • Let it dry for 1-2 hours and then reapply a coating of coloring cream.
  • Now dry it for 24 hours and then apply a little leather conditioner and your shoe is ready.

Note: Before you apply the coloring cream directly to the shoe first apply the cream somewhere else like on a piece of paper and check with the shoe if it matches or not.

Repair Scuffed Toes On Shoes with Hot Water Method

This is a different and best way to fix scratches on leather shoes.

Required Supplies
  • Transparent Glue
  • Horse hair brush
  • Hand gloves
  • Hot water and a cup
  • A teaspoon
  • Emery paper
  • Shoe color

Method

  • This method perfectly works if your shoe has deep cut marks on the toe cap side or anywhere else.
  • Take a cup of hot water and dip the spoon inside for some minutes to heat the spoon.
  • Now apply the glue between the cuts and with the heated spoon rub on the area in a circular motion.
  • This way, the glue will melt and spread around the affected area. Repeat it 3 to 4 times until the cut area is filled.
  • Dry the shoe properly for some hours.
  • As we are using transparent glue we also need to color it.
  • With the emery paper rub the glue area to match the level and make it smooth.
  • Now according to your shoe color apply the color and dry it for 2 to 3 hours.
  • Apply shoe polish cream and conditioner use it as new.

Things to Remember

  • The water should not be too hot. When you are dipping the spoon into the hot water then before applying on the shoe first check it with your fingers.

Tea Tree Oil Method

Whenever a scratch comes on the shoes, most probably the shoe starts discoloring from that area. And in this situation, tea tree oil comes into the picture.

Tea tree oil darkens the area so that the color blends with the surrounding color and the scratch vanishes. It moisturizes the leather for further damage to the shoe.

Method

  • Mix tea tree oil with another oil like coconut oil and the ratio should be 1:2.
  • Dip a soft cloth into the mixture and gently rub on the scratched area in a circular motion.
  • Make sure to perform the task after cleaning and moisturizing the shoe properly.
  • Keep the shoe for 1 to 2 hours untouched.
  • The mixture will sit on the spots and will blend with the existing color of the shoe.
  • Now with a dry cloth gently clean the excess oil residue.
  • If the scratch is still visible then repeat the same process 2 to 3 times.
